Latest news from Woodpecker Pool June 2008

Summer has still not arrived in the Dordogne as yet, we are still having a lot of rain and thunder storms but not a lot of sunshine, lets hope it arrives soon, if not Sue and I are thinking about building an Ark!!!!

On the 18th April we welcomed back Chris Davies and John Owen, these two guys are from the Welsh valleys and we have known them for several years, they have fished here in the past so it was great to see them again. The weather was very up and down all week so what sort of a result would they have.

They had a great week as the fish were very obliging and they are both very good angler's.

The total for the week was 61 fish for a weight of 1624lb 10oz for an average of 27lb with new personal bests to both angler's.

The catch included 23 x 20s, 16 x 30s!!! Fantastic!!!  Out of which 14 were carp and 2 catfish and finally 2 x 50lb plus catfish. The biggest fish were catfish 56lb 4oz, mirror 37lb 12oz and common 36lb 4oz.

A great week fishing guys, thank you for your company and help during the week and we look forward to seeing you again.

26th April and we welcomed back Andy and Sue Rudduck with Jim and Helen Nicholson, two great couples who came last year. The weather again was all over the place so how would they go on this time round, especially after the previous week.

Jim wasn't very well all week so did not fish as much as he would have liked to but still had some very nice fish.

They ended up with a total of 34 fish for a weight of 805lbs with an average of 23lb 4oz.

The catch included a bag of twenties and some nice thirties and one 50lb plus catfish.

The biggest fish were catfish 52lb, a new personal best for Andy, and a mirror of 35lb, no commons were caught this week.

3rd May and we welcomed for the first time to Woodpecker Mark Bullock and his two sons George 15 and Harry 13, this was to be Harry's first time carp fishing so how did this week pan out.

It turned out to be an up and down week, fish lost and fish caught but it produced two new lake records, one for Mark in the shape of a 37lb 4oz common and new personal best and one for Harry a 61lb 4oz catfish also a new personal best. Harry was assisted by brother George as they could not get the catfish in the landing net so George jumped in the lake to get the fish in the net, well done and thank you for coming to the house to get me so I could see the fish and weigh it.

They had a total of 26 fish for a weight of 750lb 8oz for an average of 29lb. The catch included thirteen fish twenty to thirty plus pounds, 1 x 40lb plus catfish and the 61lb 4oz catfish. The best mirror was 36lb 4oz.

Harry had the two biggest fish which were the 40lb plus catfish and the 61lb 4oz catfish, well done Harry and also well done Mark with the common.

It was a pleasure to meet you all and great to see two young boys so dedicated to their angling; we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

7th June and this was a week we had taken for ourselves this year, a chance to do some fishing with our friends Stephen and Janice Cooper and Stephen's Dad Harold.

Stephen and Harold did quite a lot of float fishing and had some really nice roach and rudd plus a few small perch. The carp were being very illusive at times but we managed to bank a few nice fish during the week again not fishing 24/7 taking time out to go to the barbeque and also to do some work around the grounds.

The total for the week was 30 fish including 14 x 20s, 5 x 30s, 2 x 40+ catfish and 1x 50+ catfish. The biggest and her first ever catfish went to Jan at 56lb 8oz, the best common was the Ghost at 26lb 4oz, a rare catch and the best mirror and new lake record to Stephen of 39lb 8oz, absolute magic.

A great week for us spent in great company with good fishing in that order, we can't think of anything better.

Well that is it till next time so all the very best for now.

Sue and Doug
